Pearls at Tiffany’s – Mavis Dixon - True VIntage

There’s something wonderfully Audrey Hepburn about this one. Perhaps it’s the neat round neckline, perhaps it’s that long, clean central panel, or perhaps it’s simply the rather ladylike scattering of pearls. Whatever it is, I can absolutely imagine this with a sleek up-do and a fabulous pair of earrings. And how about opera length gloves?

Made by Mavis Dixon, a name I confess I haven’t come across before, this is a beautifully made original vintage wedding dress in pure white. The bodice is cleverly panelled, with pearls scattered over the side sections and tiny drop pearls trimming the neckline. Around the waist the pearl work becomes denser before the skirt falls away into a lovely full shape.

And the skirt is particularly clever. From the side seams, an organza overlayer sweeps around the back and continues into the train, scattered all over with individual pearls. It gives movement and fullness without losing that very clean front. Staggeringly. each pearl is hand sewn onto this gown.

Then there are the buttons. Twenty-nine of them, all properly covered and fastened with proper loops down the back. Nobody was taking shortcuts when they made this dress.

A really unusual size 10 true vintage wedding dress, beautifully constructed and wonderfully different from anything being made now.

It's in great, brilliantly clean, condition, other than a couple of very small 'heel' snags in the organza layer of the train - hard to spot, but could be removed by taking up the train length a little.
