It Started With Yellow

Beverley Tricker

“Hannah’s gown is a garden of blooms – joyful, vibrant and as unique as her Winter Gardens wedding.”

Description

Hannah’s brief was simple in words but tricky in practice: her gown had to feature yellow, her favourite colour, and it had to be floral to echo the beauty of her venue, the Winter Gardens in Aberdeen.

You’d think yellow fabrics would be everywhere, but in bridal they’re rare as hens’ teeth. I love a challenge, though, and after much hunting and a few calls to my fabric suppliers, I finally tracked down six fabrics with yellow in them. To help Hannah see the detail properly, I even showed her the same fabric in green, since the yellow version’s image wasn’t quite as clear. And so, what began as daffodil-yellow blossomed into the most beautiful soft sage.

The dress was an express commission – seven weeks from first sketch to final stitch – but still meticulously crafted. Each flower was individually hand-sewn onto the tulle of the skirt, bodice and sleeves. The sleeves were left unlined, so the fabric could shine and, even better, so glimpses of Hannah’s daffodil tattoo could peek through. It was one of those magical touches that made the dress entirely hers.

Every bespoke gown has its supporting cast, and in Hannah’s case a starring role goes to her brother-in-law, who drove all the way to Glasgow to collect the “right” pair of yellow shoes for her fitting. Only Hannah could make a gown that spectacular even better with a perfect pop of sunshine at her feet.

On the day itself, captured so beautifully by Lizzie Thurgood Photography, Hannah looked every inch the radiant bride – joyful, relaxed, and completely herself. This gown was a joy to create, and a reminder of how a bespoke dress can weave favourite colours, personal quirks and family moments into something truly unforgettable.
