English Rose - Jane Barker - True Vintage
Some dresses simply couldn't have been made anywhere else. This is one of them.
Handmade in England by Jane Baker, English Rose is a beautiful example of British bridal design at the beginning of the 1990s, when wedding dresses still celebrated proper dressmaking. The skirt is cut from sumptuous ivory silk, falling into a full ballgown with a sweeping train with that unmistakable glow only silk seems to have.
The bodice is where this gown really comes to life. 3D silk ribbon lace, creating a wonderfully textured floral effect with depth that's unlike anything you'll find on a modern dress. Long sleeves taper neatly to the wrist with rows of tiny pearl buttons. The amazingly cut sleeve heads to give superb structure that give that unmistakable early-90s silhouette without feeling overdone.
Then there's the back.
A silk bow sits at the waist, centred with handcrafted silk roses in rich shades of burgundy, plum and old rose. The same roses appear again at the end of the train like a final flourish. It's romantic, a little theatrical and completely unforgettable.
Unlike the big bridal names of the 1990s, Jane Baker gowns were handmade in England in relatively small numbers. Today they're rarely seen, making them a wonderful find for brides who appreciate craftsmanship over designer recognition.
Preloved and in excellent condition, this is a gown for a bride who loves true craftsmanship and isn't afraid to wear something with real personality. Thirty years on, she's still every inch the English Rose.
